At the foot of Round Mountain in the beautiful Ozark Mountains of north-central Arkansas stands Greers Ferry Dam. Behind that structure glistens one of the foremost recreational areas in the middle United States, Greers Ferry Lake. With over 30,000 acres of water surface, the lake serves as a playground for all kinds of recreation.
The Dam
Greers Ferry Dam is located on the Little Red River three miles northeast of Heber Springs, Arkansas. Construction of the dam began in March 1959 and was completed in July 1964. There are 1,146 square miles of drainage area above the dam. Greers Ferry Dam and Lake is one of five multiple-purpose projects constructed in the White River Basin for the control of floods and generation of hydroelectric power.
The Lake
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has stocked almost every game fish native to the state in Greers Ferry. The lake supports healthy populations of black bass, bream, crappie, catfish, walleye, white bass and hybrid, striped bass. The Little Red River, downstream of Greers Ferry Dam, is known world-wide as a premier trout fishery. The river is home to several trout species including brown, brook, cutthroat and rainbow.
Recreation
Whether you enjoy boating, skiing, fishing, swimming, camping, picnicking, or even scuba diving, Greers Ferry Lake has an activity for you. Support facilities are located in 19 parks operated by the Corps of Engineers, Arkansas State Parks, and local governments. These parks include 22 boat ramps, 11 campgrounds, 13 picnic shelters, 11 marinas, 7 designated swim areas, and hundreds of miles of undeveloped shoreline.

Greers Ferry Lake Fishing Report 04/28/2011
Tommy Cauley of Fish Finder Guide Service said the water level is rising, and the surface temperature ranges from the mid-50s to the mid-60s. Hybrids and whites will go farther up the rivers now. Look for clean water and the fish will be in the bushes spawning; swim a grub through them or throw a jerk bait. Crappie are in the bushes, but they're scattered with the rising water. They should group together as the water level settles. Again look for cleaner water and dip a jig or a jig with a minnow around the bushes until you find them. Bream will be biting crickets and crawlers way up on the bank. Catfish should really be biting well with the increased water and current; try nightcrawlers, liver and bream for bait. Walleye have been biting well in about 10-13 feet of water in front of the bushes. The rising water will make fishing for them harder, but try swimming a grub in the main lake bushes or drag a crawler on a jighead where you can. All the bass species will be up shallow; try Texas-rigged centipedes, lizards and creature baits in front of bushes or use spinnerbaits, topwaters, Senkos and tube jigs pitched to the bushes.
