Mozingo Lake 10th Tournament Results

Tournament Date: Jul 17, 2010

The Leavenworth Bass Club held its' 10th tournament of the 2010 season at Mozingo Lake near Maryville, Mo on Saturday, 17 July, launching from the City Ramp at 6:00 A.M. and weighing in at 2:00 P.M.. A relatively small lake with approximately 1000 surface acres, Mozingo is stuffed full of Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Catfish, and Bluegill. The lakes standing timber and aquatic vegetation provide great fish habit and makes it one of the premier bass fisheries in the entire Midwest. Even under extreme midsummer conditions with water temps in the mid 80s and heat indexes reaching 105, Mozingo still produced some heavy sacks of bass and lots of fish catching action. During the months of July and September Missouri fishing regulations require anglers to make a keep or release decision as soon as the fish is brought to the boat. Unlike other times of the year, when culling smaller fish with larger catches later in the day is allowed, during mid-summer the no-cull rule is in place to reduce the stress on the fish caught during the heat of summer. Saturday began like most other mid-July days with clear skies and temps in the mid 70s that quickly climbed to the mid 90s. All 12 boats and 19 of the 20 Leavenworth Bass Club anglers that fished the tournament weighed in fish with 6 five fish limits coming to the scales. The club weighed in and released 174.76 lbs of bass an 8.74lb per angler average.

Larry Stoafer

Taking 1st place was Larry Stoafer with a five fish limit that weighed 19.46 lbs. Larry's bag was anchored by a 5.31 lb beauty. Larry reported having a strong early morning bite on the outside edge of the main lake grass beds pitching a weightless Texas rigged 7inch yum dinger into 5-6ft of water. Larry caught 5 legal fish and a half dozen shorts before 8 A.M. but due to the no-cull regulation made decision to only put 2 of the early keepers in the live well, which paid off. Around 8:30 Larry made an adjustment that sealed the victory, he went with a Texas rigged 10inch Berkley Powerbait worm in the same areas but fished isolated grass patches in the 7-10ft depth instead of the grass line itself. Larry quickly caught his 4 largest bass of the day and completed his winning limit by 9:45 AM. Larry was able to put the boat on the trailer by 10 AM and wait for the 2 PM weigh-in. Larry would like to thank his sponsors for allowing him to pursue his passion of competitive bass fishing: Secret Weapon Lures, 7-24 Outdoors, Crooked Creek Tackle, Blackwater International Inc., Fish Harder Companies, Tru Tungsten, Picasso, and Youvella USA.

Dennis Edwards

Taking 2nd place was one of the Leavenworth Bass Clubs perennial powerhouses, Dennis Edwards, with a five fish limit that weighed 16.38 lbs. Dennis caught his fish flipping standing timber.

Dan Senterfitt

Taking 3rd place was a relative newcomer to tournament angling, Dan Senterfitt. In only his second year of tournament bass angling, Dan weighed in a five fish limit that weighed 12.82lbs fishing from the backseat of Bob Jorgensen's boat. Dan reported that this was his first 5 fish limit that he had ever weighed in. Dan caught his fish pitching a 5inch red shad Senko to the main lake grass lines and working it back to the boat in 6-8ft of water.

Bob Jorgensen

We had a tie for 4th place between two anglers, Bob Jorgensen and Miles Miller, both bringing in five fish limits that weighed 12.50lbs. Bob has ran away with the club's 2010 angler of the year points race scoring four wins and two second place finishes in the club's first 10 events. The angler of the year race is already wrapped up with 3 events remaining in the 2010 season. Bob's bag was anchored by a 5.25lb brute and he reported catching the majority of his fish on a 6inch watermelon red flake Yum Dinger worked along the main lake grass lines. However, Bob did report a couple of his keepers came from flipping the same bait into standing timber in 12-18ft of water.

Miles Miller

Our other 4th place angler was Miles Miller. Miles fished from the backseat of Bill Gevedon's boat and caught 3 of his fish on a 10 inch red shad worm and the other two fell for Senkos (red shad and green pumpkin with chartreuse). Miles fish came from 10ft or less of water near wood and grass cover.

Bob Greene

Taking the Boater Big Bass honors was the reigning LBC Angler of the Year Bob Greene, with a 6.33lb beast. Bob reported catching the fish on his second cast of the day on a Spro Pop N Frog on the outside edge of a main lake grass line in 6 foot of water. Bob would like to acknowledge his sponsors who provide him with the opportunity to pursue his passion of competitive tournament angling. Wired2fish, Gemini Sport Marketing, Fitzwater Custom Lures, Whopper Baits , Fish Blaster Baits , Mikes Pro Bass Gear, Iguana Grafix , R&H Marine , Transducer Armor , and Gandy Custom Tackle.

Rodney Bledsoe

Taking the Non-Boater Big Bass honors was one of the newest LBC members Rodney Bledsoe. Rodney had just joined the club in July and took the Non-Boater Big Bass title with a 5.83lb Largemouth Bass in his first event with the LBC. Rodney was fishing from the backseat of Ken Hackworth's boat and caught the behemoth bass by slowly dragging a 10" Red Shad Berkley PowerBait worm on the outside edge of the main lake grass weed line.

The Leavenworth Bass Club's next tournament is on 14 August at Mozingo Lake. As you can see there are a lot of opportunities to catch fish with The Leavenworth Bass Club. The LBC welcomes all skill levels from those who are ready to challenge their bass catching skills against some of the best local anglers in the area or those who are just looking to improve their success rates and angling skills and want to learn from a bunch of folks who truly love the sport.
